Call for Stories
We have responded to all submissions for The Society of Misfit Stories as of January 1, 2017. If you sent a story before January 1st and have not gotten a reply, please contact us immediately.
The Society of Misfit Stories seeks to provide a loving home for those misfit tales that are too long for most periodicals but too short for print.
Our goal is to publish one new story per week in digital format.
We are seeking stories between 5,000 to 20,000 words in length. We are interested in all speculative genres (horror, fantasy, science fiction, slipstream, steampunk, magical realism, etc). We will also consider mysteries, thrillers, and action-adventure stories for this series.
Stories must be complete, stand-alone stories. We will consider stories that are part of an existing setting (for example, a "prequel" story that ties into an author's novel) but the story must be self-contained and have a clear conclusion. No "cliffhanger" stories.
Preference is given to unpublished stories. We will consider previously published stories under the condition that all rights have reverted to the author and the author is able to sell exclusive digital rights to the story. i.e. If the story was sold last year to an anthology, and the anthology is still available for sale digitally, the story cannot be sold as an exclusive.
We will pay $25 per story in exchange for a 6-month exclusive digital publication period.
At the end of each calendar year, we will invite authors to have their story included in a print anthology. Authors will be paid $25 for the non-exclusive right to include the story in the anthology, which will be released in both print and digital format, and potentially audiobook format.
Stories should follow our standard fiction submission guidelines regarding format. Stories sent in the body of an email will be rejected unread. Submissions should be sent firstname.lastname@example.org using the subject line Society of Misfit Stories Submission. Please include a short synopsis of the plot with your submission.
