Sorry about that had to get more coffee. There was a line at the Kuerig machine
Mark Gardner
LOL. You mean there aren’t convention staff to bring you coffee? (That was one of the best things about PHXCC…)
efestivalofwords
Unfortunately my local staff are lazy bums that just keep asking “What are we doing about dinner?”
MsPenguin
lol
efestivalofwords
Congratulations BTW Best Historical Winner: Pestilence: Once Loved by Margaret Brazear Runner-Up: Champion Standing by Mark Gardner
Mark Gardner
I politely asked the stall to refill my bowl of Fruit Loops, and she arrived with a box, and tried to place it in front of the monitor.
Mark Gardner
Yay!
Mark Gardner
Did you hear about my appearance at San Francisco Comic Con being cancelled? I’m a bit sad. sad
efestivalofwords
What happened?
Mark Gardner
SF_CC double booked the venue, and my sponsor god bumped.
MsPenguin
BOOOOOOOO
Mark Gardner
non-refundable airfare. The good news is that I get to pick a con next year and they’ll cover everything.
efestivalofwords
Well, at least we didn’t double book the festival lol
Mark Gardner
LOL, right?
Mark Gardner
I’m thinking of doing Albuquerque, Phoenix, Tuscon, Vegas, and either Rose City or Tampa next year. My sister wants me to do Steel City Con.
Mark Gardner
Erika will only let me do four appearances a year. She’s such a taskmaster!
efestivalofwords
ONLY 4!
Mark Gardner
I tried to convince her to do Wonder Con. She and the kids can go to DisneyLand, and I can do the con. She was disinclined to acquiesce to my request.
Mark Gardner
yeah. she’s a bully.
Mark Gardner
I figure that if the con is paying for hotel, admission, and a stipend, why wouldn’t I attend them all, right?
MsPenguin
Paid vacation!
Mark Gardner
That’s how I see it.
efestivalofwords
exactly!
Mark Gardner
Plus, I’m finally at the point where people pursue me for appearances. That’s incredibly AwEsOmE!
Mark Gardner
Validation, am I right?
efestivalofwords
I need to get back on the con circuit. Been hard the last couple of years with all sort of personal stuff going on. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to get back into the swing.
efestivalofwords
You know since we’re already chatting we might as well officially start lol.
Mark Gardner
My next appearance is Prescott Comic Con on September 30th. I was sad to delete SFCC from mt schedule.
Mark Gardner
LOL. Jolly good.
Mark Gardner
I’m a rule-breaker.
efestivalofwords
Let’s welcome Mark Gardner, who can legitly (as my nephew would say) call himself an Award winning author with his Runner-Up in this Historical Fiction category!
Blaine Cartwright
Congratulations good sir!
Mark Gardner
LOL. (darn those Nebula awards!)
JoElla
Congratulations
Mark Gardner
Thank you.
efestivalofwords
lol
Mark Gardner
ugh, my spieling is atrocious.
efestivalofwords
Seriously, happy to have you here. And nobody is judging your spelling. I swear I fix typos when I post the transcripts later
Mark Gardner
Julie, can I plug a few Kindle Scout campaigns some friends are running?
efestivalofwords
You may!
MsPenguin
What’s Kindle Scout?
Mark Gardner
Rebirth, by L/ Fergus: https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/3FUYEQKDNB4V
Mark Gardner
Wolf’s Oath, by Meg Mac Donald: https://kindlescout.amazon.com/p/3N7SXFOGATBWY
Mark Gardner
KS is a crowd-sourced nomination method foe the publishing arm of Kindle Press.
MsPenguin
So Amazon publishes the winners?
Mark Gardner
I’ve got a campaign going on right now, but nominate Linn and Meg first.
Blaine Cartwright
You are a gentleman and a scholar
Mark Gardner
yeah. It’s slightly better than a small press (I love you Julie) but not as good as one of the big 6, er I mean 5.
Mark Gardner
Don;t let anyone know I’m a gentleman. I have a rep to maintain.
efestivalofwords
And here I thought we were friends lol
Mark Gardner
I’m doing my fifth campaign, and it’s already more successful than the previous four campaigns.
Mark Gardner
but, I’ve flatlined for the last three days…
Mark Gardner
I just hope Meg and Linn get selected.
Mark Gardner
It’ll be their debut novels.
efestivalofwords
Well you just need to update your promo material to reflect your new award lol.
Mark Gardner
Here’s hoping for a 2018 Hugo.
Mark Gardner
Severed Press is timing the next War of the Worlds book to coincide with the Hugo announcement.
Mark Gardner
Secret behind the scenes information time!
efestivalofwords
Very nice. I think that entire project is awesome
Mark Gardner
I’m talking to Pandamoon for a home for my murder mystery series.
Mark Gardner
Yeah, the hullabaloo with Random House notwithstanding, I’m proud of our historical/sci-fi mashup/
efestivalofwords
You know I have to say I am amazed by the sheer scope of genres you write in.
Mark Gardner
I’m hoping to get Harry Turtledove to blurb Firestorm, and Judy Jance to blurb Score of Silence.
Blaine Cartwright
What happened with Random House?
Mark Gardner
They dumped me to go with Stephen Baxter for a War of the Worlds sequel.
Mark Gardner
I’d’ve made the same decision in their shoes though. no malice.
Mark Gardner
besides, I’ve already got the contract of the next book, so no worries.
JoElla
How did the war of the worlds project start?
Mark Gardner
At PHXCC, I was across the aisle from RH, fans were wondering if I was mad.
Mark Gardner
There is a great interview in the January 2017 issue of Bards and Sages Quarterly, so I’ll give the short version here:
JoElla
Is the January issue still availble?
Mark Gardner
My friend in broadcasting, John J. Rust wrote a fan pic sequel, and I harassed him until he relented and let me co-write a full length novel.
Mark Gardner
Julie?
efestivalofwords
http://amzn.to/2viQXCW
Mark Gardner
yay!
efestivalofwords
All back issues remain on sale. not-one-care
Mark Gardner
I figured as much.
JoElla
Thank you
MsPenguin
Do you have a favorite book of yours? If you had to say “This is the book I want to be remembered for?” which is it?
Mark Gardner
It would have to be my westernized wuxi novel, Champion Standing, and its prequel, Nala’s Story. Unfortunately, everyone knows me by WotW and Body Rentals.
Valerie Hayden
WHat exactly IS wuxi? I’ve seen the term but dont know what it means
Mark Gardner
It’s basically the Chinese version of kung fu/samurai, but it predates Japanese literature by 2,000 years.
Mark Gardner
Each of the chapters in the paper version of Champion Standing has a hidden Asian parable or saying hidden within.
Blaine Cartwright
Which authors most influenced your work?
efestivalofwords
Mark you mentioned in the panel that you study applied human behavior. How does that impact your work?
Mark Gardner
Harry Turtledove is a big influence on me and John. It’s a thrill knowing that he is the proud owner of an autographed hardcover of War of the Worlds: Retaliation.
Mark Gardner
I feel that my degree allows me to write more realistic characters. behaviors, driving factors and family history are all legit in my writing.
Valerie Hayden
What does one do with a degree in applied human behavior? What does that entail
Mark Gardner
I’ll read pretty much anything by the following authors: Chuck Wendig, Zen Dipietro, Delilah Dawson, Greg Dragon, David Kristoph to name a few.
efestivalofwords
You say that like “what does one do with a degree in basket weaving?” lol
Valerie Hayden
I didn’t mean it that way!
Mark Gardner
If I were inclined, I could get me clinician’s license and practice mental health. It also looks nice on my wall silly
Mark Gardner
If I were to do that, I would specialize in veterans and marginalized children.
efestivalofwords
That would give you plenty of content for future stories I’m sure!
Mark Gardner
I once wrote a short story based on a conversation in front of me while waiting in line at DisneyLand.
efestivalofwords
Isn’t people watching fun? Did you publish the story?
Mark Gardner
I actually got an award for that one.
efestivalofwords
Which story?
Mark Gardner
“Welcome Home” it was a hallowe’en story.
efestivalofwords
What projects are you working on currently that you would like to share?
Valerie Hayden
Where was that story published?
Mark Gardner
Well, the next WotW book is about 40% done (it’s my turn to write, but I had to postpone for the eFestival of Words.) The next superhero novel, Moonrise, is currently up at KS (vote for Linn and Meg first.) Score of Silence, my murder mystery is currently at Pandamoon.
Mark Gardner
Welcome home was in a now defunct literary magazine. It’s available on my blog now that the rights have reverted.
efestivalofwords
We have a couple more minutes before our next author next guest drops in. Any last words, Mark?
Mark Gardner
Yay! Meg’s Wolf’s Oath is on the Hot and Trending list at KS.
efestivalofwords
And I will have the transcript (typos corrected) up later tonight.
JoElla
That was fast!
Mark Gardner
Vote for Meg and Linn’s books. Support the authors I mentioned, and those that attended this year’s festival.
efestivalofwords
That is the power and influence you have!
Mark Gardner
plus I got an extra few minutes because I just started talking early…
