So I have some publishing-related announcements to make.
First, beginning with the January 2019 issue of the Bards and Sages Quarterly, our payment rates will be changing. We will be increasing our payments for original, unpublished stories from $10 for flash fiction and $20 longer fiction to $25 regardless of length. In addition, we will now offer payment of $10 for previously published stories. Previously, while we accepted previously published stories, we did not offer payment.
I review our payment models annually to determine if adjustments need to be made. This is the result of stronger sales revenue from the Quarterly, particularly from print sales.
Second, we are making some major changes to The Society of Misfit Stories project. As you know from my previous blog post, Amazon has proven to be an unreliable business partner. To date, each installment in the series was an Amazon exclusive for six-months and available through their Kindle Unlimited subscription service. Recent events have demonstrated that Amazon does not offer any real protection to its exclusive business partners from the arbitrary rulings of their automated systems. While I was eventually able to talk to a human being, who apologized and promised to bring the issue up with the KDP team, I can’t actually say I have any confidence that Amazon’s behaviors will change.
As a publisher, I have an obligation to both my authors and my readers. I was never so mortified as when I had to inform an author why her story was not available on Amazon when it was scheduled to be released. While she was more than gracious and understanding, the fact of the matter is that the situation never should have occurred.
I also know that many readers were unhappy with the fact that we were exclusive with Amazon, because, contrary to popular belief, not everyone has a Kindle or a KU subscription! Instead of opening up opportunities to reach new readers, being exclusive with Amazon alienated many of our most loyal fans.
For the rest of 2018, all Misfit stories will be released on schedule through Smashwords.com and be available in epub, mobi, and PDF formats. We will also distribute the stories through our partnership with Draft2Digital to make the stories available through Barnes and Noble, Scribd, Kobo, and other retailers. These stories will still be removed from sale after six months, and be included in next year’s anthology, The Society of Misfit Stories Presents…Volume Three.
Effective 2019, the Misfit project will become a journal of long-form fiction, published three times a year.
You can now pre-order a subscription to the new journal in your choice of epub, mobi, or PDF formats. Pre-order before November 1st, and you will also get both The Society of Misfit Stories Presents…Volume One and The Society of Misfit Stories Presents…Volume Two delivered to your inbox for free. Pre-order your subscription before August 1st, and you will also get EVERY MISFIT published between August and December for the rest of the year! Pre-ordering a subscription is a great way to support us and our authors.
I feel these changes are the best way to both showcase our authors and provide our readers with the stories they want in the formats they want.
